Aja Ekadashi falls in the month of Bhadrapada (August - September) according to the Hindi Hindu calendar. Lord Krishna told Yudhishthira the importance of this Ekadashi and the evidence of this is found in Brahmavaivarta Purana. It is believed that a person who observes this Ekadashi fast becomes free from the reaction of his sinful deeds.

According to mythological beliefs, the great king Harishchandra regained his kingdom, wife and dead son after the fast of Anand or Aja Ekadashi. It was Gautam Muni who told Harishchandra to follow Aaja Ekadashi Ekadashi so that he could overcome all the difficulties in life. The king regained all that he had lost and was able to rule his kingdom without any trouble.

It is said that whoever observes this Ekadashi fast becomes free from all sins. There are no separate rules for fasting on this day. Only rice and grains are avoided.

Aja Ekadashi fasting story

In ancient times, there was a reign of a Chakravarti king. His name was Harishchandra. He was a very brave, princely and majestic ruler. To fulfill his promise, he sold his wife and son. He himself had become a servant of a cruel man.

He used to give shroud there. But even in this difficult task, he did not leave the path of truth. After many years, he began to feel bad about his work and became upset. Then he started thinking to get rid of this work and he was always fed up in this thinking.

Once, when he was thinking what to do, then Gautam Rishi was coming from the front. The king salutes him and narrates his sad story to the sage. The sage felt difficulty in hearing and seeing the position of the king and said, “O king, on the Krishna side of Bhado, Ekadashi takes place. You should observe the fast of this Ekadashi in a systematic way and do Jagran at night. You will get rid of all your sins. Gautam Rishi left from there, saying.

On the day of Aja Ekadashi, the king observed the fast and performed Jagran, as told by the sage. All the sins of the king were destroyed by the effect of this fast. At that time, flowers started to rain from the sky. The king saw Lord Brahma, Vishnu, Indra and Shiva standing before him. His dead son was now alive and his wife was in nice clothes and jewelry.

He regained his kingdom with the effect of fasting. After his death, he reached heaven with his family. All this was the result of observing the fast of Aja Ekadashi. The person who performs this fast in a systematic manner and awakened in the night, is freed from his sins. And, he finds a place in heaven after death. Just listening to the story of fast gives the fruits of Ashwamedha Yagya.
