Holi~

Holi, also called the festival of colors. The winter season marks the arrival of spring in India. This festival is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm in the nation. Like many different festivals in India, this festival also symbolizes the victory of good over evil in India. Individuals of all ages i.e. children, young people, elderly etc. all participate in it and display their incredible energy and enthusiasm in this festival spread with different colors of 'Gulal'. The festival is celebrated on Phalgun Purnima (February - March) and people color each other by saying 'Bura Na Mano Holi Hai' on each other's body or face.

Importance of Holi

This desire for celebration is more than what meets the eye and has many meanings - be it religious or cultural, social or biological. If we know the cultural significance, Holi is celebrated during the spring and this is the time when the fields blossom and people hope for a good harvest in the coming days. This festival provides an opportunity for people to enjoy the colors of spring and the abundance of nature while appealing to God for a luxurious and happy life. It is a festival that unites the general public and it is believed that during Holi, enemies also turn into friends and they forget all their past and hug and gulp on the occasion of Holi colors.

Despite the fact that, it is seen as a celebration of Hindus, people of all religions celebrate Holi festival with great pomp with their peers. Similarly the unified colors of Holi are embedded in the hearts of individuals, irrespective of their caste and religion. If we see the importance of Holi biologically, it is celebrated at a time when people are experiencing seasonal changes and it is the time when people get sick again and again. Earlier, the colors used for playing Holi were obtained from natural colors or materials like yellow for turmeric, neem to green etc. We all know the health benefits of such plants and substances, and when people paint each other with these colors, they have some medical benefits.

History of Holi

In some parts of India, particularly Bengal and Orissa, Holi Purnima is celebrated as the birthday of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (A.D. 1486–1533). Despite this, the word 'Holi' literally means 'burn'. There are different beliefs to explain the importance of this word, the most specific of which is the belief related to the demon ruler Hiranyakashyap.

Hiranyakashipu wanted everyone in his kingdom to worship him only but to his great disappointment when his own son Prahlada became a devotee of Lord Narayana. Hiranyakashyap allowed his sister Holika to enter the blazing fire with Prahlad on her lap. Holika had a boon that she could never burn in a fire. However, she was not aware that this boon works only when she enters the fire alone. As a result he paid a price for his sinister desires, while Prahlada was saved by the grace of God for his extreme devotion. Therefore, this festival celebrates the victory of good over evil and the triumph of devotion.

The belief of Lord Krishna is likewise associated with playing with colors as Prabhu started the tradition of playing with colors by applying colors on his beloved Radha and different gopis. Gradually, this custom gained popularity among the people and became a tradition.

Similarly, there are various beliefs related to this festival - such as the legend of Shiva and Cupid and Odh Dhundi and Putana. All portray the victory of good over hatred.

Rituals

Celebrations are an approach to make celebrations important and entertaining for enjoyment. On the day before Holi, a brilliant bright bonfire is lit at every place in Uttar Pradesh, known as Holika. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil. As indicated by mythological beliefs, the demon ruler Hiranyakashyap planned to slay his child Prahlada along with his sister Holika, being a prominent devotee of Lord Narayana. He was not fruitful in his main goal anyway. His child was saved by the grace of God, although his sister was consumed by the flame.

Everyone takes interest to light the flame. A pot of new grain seeds is kept under the fire. At this point when the flame burns, these seeds are eaten by individuals. Expectations are often made about future crops based on the position or direction of seeds. The flaming remains of this flame are seen as prophetic and are regularly retrieved from either its ashes or individual pieces of wood. They burn fires at home with these embers and keep the ashes that they believe will protect them from diseases.
