Kalashtami or Kala Ashtami is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Bhairava and every Hindu lunar month is celebrated on the 'Krishna Paksha Ashtami Tithi' (the eighth day after the end of the moon).

The 'Ashtami Tithi' (eighth day) after 'Purnima' (full moon) is seen as the most appropriate day to please Lord Kaal Bhairava. On this day, Hindu devotees worship Lord Bhairav and keep a vow to satisfy them. There are 12 Kalashtami darshan in a year.

Of these, the date falling in the month of 'Margashirsha' is the largest and it is known as 'Kalabhairava Jayanti'. Kalashtami, which falls on Sunday or Tuesday, is considered holy, as these days are dedicated to Lord Bhairava. This festival of Kalashtami is celebrated with enthusiasm and zeal throughout the country.

Importance of Kalashtami

The word Kaal means "time" in Hinduism. Apart from this, Kaal Bhairava makes an avatar of Lord Shiva. Kaal Bhairava is the symbol of "Lord of Time". According to Hindu folklore, Lord Shiva became angry at Lord Brahma because a comment was passed on him. He appeared as "Mahakaleshwar" and beheaded Lord Brahma's fifth. Since that time, he is also worshiped as Kaal Bhairava.

It is believed that no negative energy can hurt you on this occasion unless you treat it with full reverence and faith. He is known to protect his devotees from negative energies. Remembering Lord Bhairava removes all the sorrows, pains and problems from your life.

History

Bhairav is a form of Shiva's anger. According to folklore, the Trimurti celestial beings, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva were all talking about themselves. In the heated discussion, Shiva felt humiliated by the remarks made by Brahma and ordered his gana Bhairava to cut off one of the five heads of Brahma. Bhairava complied with Shiva's request and one head of Brahma was cut off and thus he became the four chieftains. All the other gods, full of fear, prayed to Shiva and Bhairava to calm down.

Another belief is that when Brahma insulted Shiva, Bhairava (Kaal-Bhairava) appeared from the forehead of the enraged Shiva and cut off Brahma's head, leaving only four heads. The head of Brahma fell on the left palm of Bhairava due to the sin of killing Brahma, which is the most read version of Brahman - Brahmana or Brahmanism. To atone for the sin of Brahmana, Bhairava had to fast a kapali: wandering the world as a beggar naked with a beggar's skull as a beggar. Bhairav's sin ends when he arrives at the holy city of Varanasi, where a dedicated temple still exists.

Rituals during Kalashtami:

Kalashtami is an important day for the followers of Lord Shiva. On this day, the devotees get up early in the morning and take a bath. He then worships Kaal Bhairava devoutly to seek his divine blessings and forgiveness for his sins.

Devotees visit the temple of Lord Kaal Bhairav in the evening and they are specially worshiped there. It is believed that Kalashtami is an avid form of Lord Shiva. He was born to put an end to the arrogance and anger of Lord Brahma.

On Kalashtami special pujas and rituals are offered to the deceased ancestors during the morning.

Devotees keep a fast for the whole day. Some devotees stay alert all night and spend their time listening to the recitation of Mahakaleshwar. A person who observes Kalashtami fast gets prosperity and happiness and gets success in his life.

Reciting Kaal Bhairav Katha and reciting mantras dedicated to Lord Shiva is considered extremely auspicious.

It is also a practice to feed dogs on Kalashtami as the black dog is considered to be the vehicle of Lord Bhairava. Dogs are given milk, yogurt and sweets.
