In this way a person's dirt or impurities are washed away and his / her soul is cleansed.

Mouni Amavasya (Magha Amavasya) Story

Once upon a time, a Brahmin named Devaswamy lived in Kanchipuri. Dhanwati was his wife. They had seven sons and a daughter. His daughter's name was Gunwati. After marrying all his 7 sons, Devaswamy sent his elder son in search of a good boy for his daughter. Then, an astrologer said that after the completion of the marriage, Gunawati would be widowed. Hearing this, Devaswamy and others became very worried. Devaswamy asked the astrologer to solve this problem. He said, a Washerwoman named Soma lives on an island named Singhal. By worshiping Soma, this defect of Gunawati can be overcome. Therefore, Ganawati and her youngest brother left for Singhal Island. The island was situated in the middle of the sea. The two sat under a tree, waiting to cross the sea. A vulture had built its nest on that tree. The vulture's children lived in the nest. When the vulture returned to the nest with his wife, their children said, "Brother and sister have been sitting under the tree since morning, they are hungry and thirsty." Therefore, we will also have no food. So the vulture gave food to Gunvati and his brother and asked the reason for their arrival. Then, he narrated the entire incident. After hearing the whole matter, the vulture assured him to reach Singhal Island. The next day, the vulture took them to the island and left.

After arriving on the island, the two begin to do Soma Dhobin's housework. The cleaning of the house etc. was done by brother and sister in a very systematic and good manner. When Soma was awake, she wondered, who does all this work. When Soma asked her daughter-in-law, she would cleverly answer that it was done by her. Soma could not believe it and decided to stay the night. Soma then noticed that Gunawati and her brother do all the household work. Soma was very happy with him and asked the reason behind it. When Gunwati narrated the things told by the astrologer about her marriage etc., Soma blessed her. Both brother and sister requested him to come to the wedding. Soma agreed and told her daughter-in-law "If someone dies in the house, don't cremate her until I come."

Gunwati's marriage had begun. As soon as the marriage was over, her husband was dead. Soma gave life to her husband by virtue of his qualities. Now, all his good deeds ended, as a result, his family members living on Singhal Island died. On his way back home, Soma worked to save Gomukh. She sat under a peepal tree. He worshiped the tree and performed parikrama (parikrama) 108 times. As a result, the dead members of his family were back alive. Soma received the result of his selfless service.
