Pongal~

Sankranti becomes Pongal in the south. It is a celebration of the harvest, which is celebrated for three days in January. Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal and Mattu Pongal are three consecutive days of Pongal celebrations. In some parts the race of cattle is still included in the village festivities. Pongal is a colorful and traditional festival with many ceremonies dedicated to various deities.

Pongal is an important festival in India, and we worship the Sun God on this occasion. In North India it is known as Sankranti.

The sun is very powerful and helps in the growth of paddy and other plantations. Hence this festival is very important for the farmers and hence it is celebrated in a grand manner in the villages. The house is cleaned, and all maintenance work is done before this festival. During the four-day festival, different compositions of Rangoli are made in front of the houses from the morning itself.

History behind Pongal

The Pongal festival is at least 2,000 years old and a traditional festival as evidences show that it was also celebrated during the days of medieval Chola Empire. According to mythological beliefs, it is a day of thanking and worshiping the Sun God, who provides energy for our development and helps crops grow because the livelihood of the farmers depends on it.

The Bhogi festival begins on the last day of Margaji, known as "Bhogi". On this day, we wake up early in the morning to take a bath. We keep all the dustbins in front of the house and put all the garbage in it. We dispose of old and useless things from our house and replace them with new things. Then we make Rangoli in front of the houses.

Paddy is harvested on the day of Pongal. Using new rice, "Pongal" prasad is made and offered to the Lord. Lord Surya walks in a chariot driven by seven horses. The picture of the chariot is kept in an open space when the sun comes. There is also a small sun in the center of the chariot. We keep turmeric twig and sugarcane in worship and worship is done on the chariot itself. Then dishes are offered to the Lord. Once the pooja ends, everyone in the house takes a small amount of Pongal Prasad and sprinkles it throughout the house saying "Ponglo Pongal". This is done as a prayer to God to bless their homes.

Mattu Pongal falls the next day, Mattu Pongal - Pongal for cows. Cows are worshiped on this day. Milk suppliers decorate cows. They paint horns, paint and tie clothes on cows. Then they take the cows to all the houses.

On the day of Kannum Pongal, people go out of the house and enjoy this day. This is a day to spend time and entertainment outside. In Madurai, Tiruchirapalli and Tanjore fight a type of bull called Jellikuttu. Bundles of money are tied to the horns of a cruel bull, and unarmed men try to strangle them.

On this day, community meals are organized at many places, by the material provided by their hard harvest.
