Importance of Rath Yatra

Jagannath Rath Yatra or 'Lord Jagannath's Rath Yatra', celebrated in the month of Ashada (June-July), is a festival that celebrates the annual Yatra of the Lord at his birthplace. The Jagannath temple in Puri, Odisha is the site of all celebrations. Many lakhs of people gather in Puri for this festival. There is an atmosphere of historical devotion everywhere.

Jagannath's images, as known to Lord Krishna, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra are taken to the Gundicha house in huge chariots. They stay there for a week and then return to the temple. In their journey they sing and celebrate with a huge procession of people.

Mythological Reference

It is believed that this festival has been celebrated since ancient times. According to a belief about its origin, Jagannath expressed his desire to visit his birthplace for one week per year. Accordingly, the deities are taken to the Gundicha temple every year.

According to another belief, Subhadra wanted to go to her parents' house in Dwarka, and her brothers took her there on this day. The yatra is a commemoration of that journey.

According to the Bhagavad Purana, it is believed that on this day Krishna and Balarama went to Mathura to participate in a wrestling competition at the invitation of bronze.

Some Hindus believe that Jagannath is an incarnation of Vishnu. Since Vishnu has four arms, Balabhadra, Subhadra and Sudarshan represent the four arms of Vishnu. Each deity has its own huge chariot, replicas of the temple. Jagannath's chariot, Nandighosha, is of yellow color, 45 feet high and 16 wheels, each one is seven feet in diameter. Around 4,200 devotees draw chariots. Balabhadra's chariot is called Taladhwaj, which is blue in color and has 14 wheels. Subhadra's chariot is the smallest, which has 12 wheels and is called Deviratha.

According to one belief, when a poisonous arrow killed Krishna, his body was left under a tree. Later, someone cremated him and put the ashes in a box. Directed by Vishnu, Indradyumna requested the divine artisan Vishwakarma to create an image from the sacred relic. Vishwakarma agreed to carry out this task, provided that he was left until its completion. When many years passed, Indradyumna became impatient and left to see how the work was proceeding. Enraged, Vishwakarma left the image incomplete. Indradyumna ordered the construction of a temple to build the statue. So he ordered his chariot to be taken to the temple, the statue. There, Brahma breathed life into the image.

Rituals

This day is a public holiday in the state. Children appear on the streets carrying miniature versions of the chariots on which the idols are installed. The shops and houses are decorated with flowers, lights and rangoli. Special dishes and sweets are prepared. Most people refrain from eating non-vegetarian food. As this festival comes during the monsoon season, people join the procession, thanking the gods for their kindness and blessings. There is no deity anywhere else, once taken out of the temple. The only exception to this general rule is the Jagannath temple at Puri. In fact during the Rath Yatra, the chariots become mobile temples, which sanctify the city.
