Chaitra Navratri signifies the start of the Indian Hindu new year i.e. the 1st day or Prathama tithi of the Chitra Sudi every year. Navaratri (festival of nine nights) is dedicated to Goddess Durga and her nine forms. Nine days have great religious significance in the form of Goddess Durga, Adi Shakti killed the evil power (demon Mahishasura) during this period. This festival is celebrated with true reverence and purity throughout the country.

People of different sections of the society, irrespective of caste or creed, go to temples and offer prayers at the feet of the mother. In some places, special worship is done by installing pictures of Maa Durga on specially decorated pandals. Temples dedicated to Shakti also arrange worship and procession to mark these nine days as a true symbol of devotion and worship to the divine mother.

Importance of Chaitra Navratri

Chaitra Navratri is one of the most important festivals of Hindus. Devotees worship Mother Goddess, the goddess of cosmic power, during this time and wish to receive the blessings of the goddess. Fasting and prayer are the main points of Navratri celebrations. Goddess Shakti manifests herself in three different dimensions such as Goddess Lakshmi, Saraswati and Durga. Navratri is divided into sets of three days to consider the three different aspects of Adi Shakti.

On the first three days, the goddess of energy (Durga) is worshiped. The next three days are worshiped to Lakshmi or the Goddess of Wealth and the last three days to Saraswati or the Goddess of Knowledge. On the eighth and ninth day, a yajna (offering to Agni) is performed to worship and bid farewell to Durga Mata. These days the girl is worshiped. The nine young girls (who have not reached a young age) represent the nine forms of Goddess Durga. In some areas a young boy also accompanies them which is the symbol of Bhairava, who is considered the protector against all evils. Those who worship the goddess without any expectation or desire, receive their blessings as the ultimate liberation from all bondages.
