दुर्गा अष्टमी, दुर्गा पूजा के दूसरे दिन मनाई जाती है। इसे महा दुर्गाष्टमी के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। दुर्गा अष्टमी के दिन भी देवी दुर्गा की पूजा करने की प्रक्रिया सप्तमी के समान ही है। हालाँकि, इस दिन प्राण प्रतिष्ठा नहीं की जाती है। महास्नान के बाद दुर्गा अष्टमी के दिन, देवी दुर्गा का षोडशोपचार पूजन किया जाता है।

महा दुर्गा अष्टमी के दिन, नौ छोटे बर्तन रखे जाते हैं और देवी दुर्गा के सभी नौ रूपों की आरधना की जाती है, देवी का स्मरण किया जाता है। इस दिन देवी दुर्गा के सभी नौ स्वरूपों की पूजा करने का विधान है।

दुर्गा अष्टमी का महत्व :

दुर्गा अष्टमी, जैसा कि नाम से ज्ञात होता है, यह पर्व देवी दुर्गा को समर्पित है। इस त्यौहार का महत्व हिंदू धर्म में बहुत है। ऐसा माना जाता है कि इस दिन देवी काली ने मां दुर्गा के माथे से प्रकट होकर दुष्ट राक्षसों चंड और मुंड का विनाश किया था। देवी दुर्गा का आशीर्वाद प्राप्त करने के लिए भक्त इस दिन एक दिन का व्रत रखते हैं। ऐसी मान्यता है कि जो व्यक्ति दुर्गा अष्टमी का व्रत सच्ची श्रद्धा व् समर्पण के साथ करता है, उसे सौभाग्य, सफलता और आनंद की अनुभूति होती है।

इस दिन अस्त्र पूजन का चलन भी है जिसमें श्रद्धालु देवी दुर्गा के हथियारों की पूजा करते हैं। इस दिन को वीर अष्टमी के नाम से भी पुकारा जाता है।

दुर्गा पूजा का उत्सव :

दुर्गा पूजा देश में सबसे विशाल रूप से मनाए जाने वाले पर्वो में से एक है, जिसमें यह उत्सव एक सप्ताह से अधिक समय तक चलता है। हर दिन का अपना विशेष अर्थ होता है और हर दिन अलग-अलग क्रियाकलाप होते हैं। इनमें से कुछ निम्न हैं :

महाशक्ति : पौराणिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार, महाशक्ति को इस दिन उस रूप में जाना जाता है जब देवी दुर्गा अपने 4 बच्चों देवी सरस्वती, देवी लक्ष्मी, भगवान गणेश और भगवान कार्तिकेय के साथ धरती पर आई थीं। महाषष्ठी की पूर्व संध्या पर, देवी दुर्गा की मूर्ति का चेहरा अनावरण किया जाता है। इस दिन किए जाने वाले अनुष्ठान बहुत महत्त्वपूर्ण हैं। 'अक ढाक' के नाम से जानने वाले ड्रमों को हर जगह देवी दुर्गा के आगमन का संकेत देने के लिए लगाया जाता है।

महा सप्तमी : महा सप्तमी की पूर्व संध्या पर महा पूजा का आयोजन होता है। सूरज उगने से ठीक पहले, एक केले का पेड़ पवित्र पानी में डूबा होता है और फिर इसे एक नई साड़ी के साथ ढक दिया जाता है, जैसे कि एक नवविवाहित महिला। इस अनुष्ठान को 'कोला बौल' या 'नाबापत्रिका' के नाम से जाना जाता है। केले के पेड़ को देवी दुर्गा की मूर्ति के साथ ही रखा जाता है। 9 पौधे भी रखे जाते हैं जो देवी दुर्गा के 9 रूपों का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हैं।

महा अष्टमी : पौराणिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार, महा अष्टमी वह दिन है जब देवी दुर्गा ने महिषासुर का वध किया था, जिसे 'भैंसा शैतान' के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। प्राचीन समय में, इस अवसर को चिह्नित करने के लिए एक भैंस की बलि दी जाती थी। संस्कृत में भजनों का उच्चारण किया जाता है और लोग अपनी मनोकामना मांगते हैं। प्रार्थना को 'अंजलि' का रूप कहा जाता है। 

9 साल से कम उम्र की लड़कियों को देवी दुर्गा के रूप में चित्रित किया जाता है और उनकी पूजा की जाती है। इस अनुष्ठान को 'कुमारी पूजा' के रूप में जाना जाता है। इसके बाद 'संध्या पूजा' की जाती है।

महा नवमी : 'संध्या पूजा' समाप्त होने के पश्चात, महा नवमी शुरू होती है। 'महा आरती', 'महा नवमी' की पूर्व संध्या पर की जाती है। इसके उपरान्त मनोरंजक गतिविधियों का आयोजन किया जाता है, जिसके बाद सभी को 'भोग' परोसा जाता है।

महा दशमी : महा दशमी की पूर्व संध्या पर, देवी दुर्गा की मूर्ति को गंगा नदी के पवित्र जल में विसर्जन किया जाता है। विसर्जन से पूर्व, उपासकों द्वारा ट्रकों पर ढोल नगाड़ों के साथ जुलूस निकाला जाता है, जो गायन और नृत्य दोनों के साथ होता है। इस उत्सव के दौरान उत्साहित शादीशुदा महिलाएं एक-दूसरे को सिंदूर लगाती हैं। शाम के समय, लोग एक-दूसरे के घरों में जाते हैं और 'विजय दशमी' पर्व का आनंद उठाते हैं। इस दिन विशेष प्रकार के व्यंजन भी तैयार किए जाते हैं।

दुर्गा अष्टमी के दौरान किये जाने वाले रीति रिवाज :

दुर्गा पूजा में सुंदर रूप से सजी हुई मूर्तियाँ और सजे हुए सार्वजनिक पूजा पंडाल सम्मिलित होते हैं। माँ दुर्गा की प्रतिमा को फूल, कपड़े, आभूषण और लाल सिंदूर आदि से सजाया जाता है। प्रसाद के रूप में देवी को विभिन्न मिठाइयाँ अर्पित की जाती हैं। भगवान गणेश की मूर्ति को भी सजाया जाता है और देवी दुर्गा की मूर्ति के समीप रखा जाता है, क्योंकि उन्हें भगवान शिव की पत्नी, पार्वती का पुत्र माना जाता है।

देवी दुर्गा की विभिन्न रूपों में वंदना की जाती है, जिनमें से सबसे प्रसिद्ध कुमारी (कुंवारी) हैं। अष्टमी के दिन, छोटी लड़कियों की पूजा की जाती है। इस अनुष्ठान को पूजा का सबसे शुद्ध रुप माना जाता है।

बंगाल में, एक लोकप्रिय अनुष्ठान सिंदुर खेला है। दुर्गा पूजा के अंतिम दिन, विवाहित महिलाएँ पूजा पंडालों में इकट्ठा होती हैं और एक दूसरे को सिंदूर (सिंदूर) फेंकती हैं, उसी तरह जैसे उत्तर भारत में लोग होली पर रंगों से खेलते हैं। यह अनुष्ठान देवी दुर्गा को विदाई देने का है। देवी की मूर्तियाँ नदियों में विसर्जित की जाती हैं, वह भी पुरे परिवार के साथ, इसके बाद प्रियजनों के साथ मिठाइयों और उपहारों का आदान-प्रदान किया जाता है।

Importance of Durga Ashtami :

Durga Ashtami, as the name suggests, is dedicated to Goddess Durga. This festival is very important in Hinduism. It is believed that on this day Goddess Kali appeared from the forehead of Mother Durga and destroyed the evil demons Chand and Mund. 

Devotees observe a day fast to get the blessings of Goddess Durga. It is believed that a person who observes Durga Ashtami fast with true devotion and dedication experiences good luck, success and happiness.

On this day there is a practice of Astra Pujan in which devotees worship the weapons of Goddess Durga. This day is also called as Veer Ashtami.

Durga Puja Festival :

Durga Puja is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the country, in which the festival lasts for more than a week. Every day has its own special meaning and every day has different activities. Some of these are:

Mahashakti : According to mythological beliefs, Mahashakti is known on this day when Goddess Durga came to earth with her 4 children Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha and Lord Karthikeya. On the eve of Maha Shashthi, the face of the idol of Goddess Durga is unveiled. The rituals performed on this day are Amontron, Bodhan and Adibush. Drums known as 'Ak Dhak' are placed everywhere to signal the arrival of Goddess Durga.

Maha Saptami : Maha Puja is held on the eve of Maha Saptami. Just before the sun rises, a banana tree is submerged in holy water and is then covered with a new sari, such as a newlywed woman. This ritual is known as 'Kola Baul' or 'Nabapatrika'. The banana tree is kept along with the idol of Goddess Durga. 9 plants are also placed which represent the 9 forms of Goddess Durga.

Maha Ashtami : According to mythological beliefs, Maha Ashtami is the day when Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura, also known as 'buffalo devil'. In ancient times, a buffalo was sacrificed to mark the occasion. In Sanskrit hymns are chanted and people ask for their wishes. The prayer is called the form of 'Anjali'. 

Girls under 9 years old are portrayed as Goddess Durga and are worshiped. This ritual is known as 'Kumari Puja'. This is followed by ‘Sandhya Puja’.

Maha Navami : After 'Sandhya Puja' ends, Maha Navami begins. The 'Maha Aarti' is performed on the eve of 'Maha Navami'. After this recreational activities are organized, after which 'Bhoga' is served to all.

Maha Dashami : On the eve of Maha Dashami, the idol of Goddess Durga is immersed in the holy waters of the Ganges River. Before immersion, worshipers take out a procession with drums on trucks, which is accompanied by both singing and dancing. 

The married women during the procession apply sindoor to each other. In the evening, people go to each other's houses and enjoy the 'Vijay Dashami' festival. On this day special types of dishes are also prepared.

Rituals During Durga Ashtami :

Durga Puja consists of beautifully decorated idols and adorned public worship pandals. The idol of Goddess Durga is decorated with flowers, clothes, ornaments and red vermilion etc. Various sweets are offered to the Goddess in the form of Prasad. 

The idol of Lord Ganesha is also decorated and placed near the idol of Goddess Durga, as he is considered to be the son of Lord Shiva's wife, Parvati.

Goddess Durga is worshiped in various forms, the most famous of which is Kumari (virgin). On Ashtami, little girls are worshiped. This ritual is considered the purest form of worship.

In Bengal, a popular ritual sindoor is played. On the last day of Durga Puja, married women gather in puja pandals and throw Vermilion (sindoor) to each other, just as north Indians play in colors on Holi. The ritual is to bid farewell to Goddess Durga. The idols of the goddess are immersed in the rivers, that too with the entire family, followed by the exchange of sweets and gifts with loved ones.
