कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्दशी को नरक चतुर्दशी कहा जाता है। पौराणिक ग्रंथो के अनुसार, यह दिन मृत्यु के देवता यमराज की पूजा का दिन है। नरक चतुर्दशी को छोटी दिवाली के रूप में भी जाना जाता है क्योंकि यह पर्व दिवाली से एक दिन पहले मनाया जाता है। इस दिन यमुना या किसी पवित्र नदी में स्नान का बड़ा महत्व है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि अगर कोई व्यक्ति नरक चतुर्दशी के दिन यमुना में स्नान करें तो उसे यमलोक नहीं जाना पड़ता है।

नरक चतुर्दशी का महत्व
नरक चतुर्दशी के दिन दीप प्रज्ज्वलन के महत्व के साथ-साथ पौराणिक महत्व भी है। इस दिन संध्याकाल के समय, दीये का प्रकाश हमारे जीवन से अंधेरे को दूर करता है। इसी कारणवश, हम नरक चतुर्दशी को चोटी दिवाली भी कहते हैं। नरक चतुर्दशी पर दीये जलाने के पीछे कई अन्य सिद्धांत भी हैं।
1. नरकासुर नामक राक्षस का वध : प्राचीन समय की बात है नरकासुर नामक एक दैत्य रहता था, जिसने अपनी अलौकिक क्षमताओं से सभी लोगो को परेशान करना शुरू कर दिया था। उनकी हरकतों का स्तर इस कदर बढ़ गया कि उस पर अंकुश लगाना लगभग असंभव हो गया। हालात तो यहाँ तक हो गए की उसने 16 हजार देवताओं की पत्नियों को बंधक बना लिया। हर संभव यातना को झेलते हुए भी नरकासुर ने उन्हें नहीं छोड़ा, संत और पुजारी मदद के लिए भगवान कृष्ण के पास गए। भगवान कृष्ण ने सभी परेशान संतों और पुजारियों को आश्वासन दिया कि दोषी पक्ष को न्याय दिया जाएगा। नरकासुर को श्राप दिया गया था कि वह एक स्त्री के हाथों मारा जाएगा। इसलिए, बहुत चतुराई से, भगवान कृष्ण ने अपनी पत्नी के सहयोग और कार्तिक के महीने में, चंद्रमा के 14 वें दिन के कृष्ण पक्ष पर, भगवान कृष्ण ने अंततः नरकासुर को स्त्री वेश धारण कर मार दिया । एक बार जब दैत्य मर गया, तो 16 हजार को छोड़ दिया गया। इन 16 हज़ार के बंधकों को पटरानिया कहा जाने लगा।
कार्तिक माह की अमावस्या को नरकासुर की मृत्यु के बाद, लोग नरक चतुर्दशी और दिवाली मनाने के लिए दीप जलाते हैं।
कैसे मनाएं?
लोग सुबह जल्दी उठकर किसी भी कड़वे फल को तोड़कर अपने माथे पर कुमकुम-तेल का लेप लगाते हैं, जिसे 'उबटन' कहा जाता है। फल का टूटना दानव राजा, नरकासुर के सिर का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है और कुमकुम-तेल का लेप उस रक्त का प्रतीक है जो भगवान कृष्ण ने अपने माथे पर लगाया था। महाराष्ट्र राज्य में, लोग अपने माथे पर बेसन, सुगंधित पाउडर और तेल का लेप लगाने के बाद पारंपरिक शुरुआती स्नान करते हैं। जब तक स्नान करने का रिवाज होता है, पटाखे और आतिशबाजी की गगनभेदी ध्वनि सुनी जा सकती है ताकि बच्चे स्नान करने का आनंद लें। शाम के समय, लोग छोटी दिवाली के उत्सव को चिह्नित करने के लिए अपने घर में और आसपास दीया और मोमबत्तियां जलाना शुरू करते हैं।

Importance of Naraka Chaturdashi
Along with the importance of lighting the lamp on the day of Naraka Chaturdashi, it also has mythological significance. On this day in the evening, the light of diyas removes darkness from our lives. For this reason, we also call Naraka Chaturdashi as Choti Diwali. There are many other theories behind lighting lamps on Naraka Chaturdashi.
1. Slaughter of the demon named Narakasura: It is a matter of ancient times that there lived a demon named Narakasura, who started harassing all the people with his supernatural abilities. The level of his antics increased so much that it became almost impossible to control him. Things got so far that he took the wives of 16 thousand gods as hostages. Even after facing every possible torture, Narakasura did not leave him, the saints and priests went to Lord Krishna for help. Lord Krishna assured all the troubled saints and priests that justice would be given to the guilty side. Narakasura was cursed that he would be killed by a woman. Therefore, very cleverly, Lord Krishna supported his wife and in the month of Kartik, on the Krishna side of the 14th day of the moon, Lord Krishna eventually killed Narakasura disguised as a woman. Once the monster died, 16 thousand were released. These 16 thousand hostages came to be called Paterna.
After Narakasura's death on the new moon day of Kartik month, people light a lamp to celebrate Naraka Chaturdashi and Diwali.
How to Celebrate?
People wake up early in the morning and pluck any bitter fruit and apply kumkum-oil paste on their forehead, which is called 'Urban'. The breakdown of the fruit represents the head of the demon king, Narakasura, and the Kumkum-oil paste symbolizes the blood that Lord Krishna applied to his forehead. In the state of Maharashtra, people take a traditional initial bath after applying besan, scented powder and oil coating on their foreheads. As long as it is customary to bathe, the deafening sound of firecrackers and fireworks can be heard so that the children enjoy bathing. In the evening, people start lighting diyas and candles in and around their house to mark the celebration of Chhoti Diwali.
