इस दिन कलश स्थापना के साथ ही माँ दुर्गा की पूजा शुरू की जाती है। पहले दिन माँ दुर्गा के पहले स्वरूप शैलपुत्री की पूजा होती है। पर्वतराजहिमालय के यहाँ पुत्री रूप में उत्पन्न होने के कारण इनका नाम शैलपुत्री पड़ा था। भगवती का वाहन वृषभ, दाहिने हाथ में त्रिशूल, और बायें हाथ में कमल सुशोभित है।
अपने पूर्व जन्म में ये प्रजापति दक्ष की कन्या के रूप में उत्पन्न हुई थीं। तब इनका नाम सती था। इनका विवाह भगवान शंकरजी से हुआ था। एक बार वह अपने पिता के यज्ञ में गईं तो वहाँ अपने पति भगवान शंकर के अपमान को सह न सकीं। उन्होंने वहीं अपने शरीर को योगाग्नि में भस्म कर दिया। अगले जन्म में शैलराज हिमालय की पुत्री के रूप में जन्म लिया और शैलपुत्री नाम से विख्यात हुईं। इस जन्म में भी शैलपुत्री देवी शिवजी की ही अर्द्धांगिनी बनीं।
नव दुर्गाओं में प्रथम शैलपुत्री का महत्त्व और शक्तियाँ अनन्त हैं। नवरात्र पूजन में प्रथम दिन इन्हीं की पूजा और उपासना की जाती है। इस दिन उपासना में योगी अपने मन को मूलाधार चक्र में स्थित करते हैं। यहीं से उनकी योगसाधना का आरम्भ होता है। इस स्वरूप का आज के दिन पूजन किया जाता है। आवाहन, स्थापन और विसर्जन ये तीनों आज प्रात:काल ही होंगे। किसी एकान्त स्थान पर मृत्तिका से वेदी बनाकर उसमें जौ गेंहू बोये जाते हैं। उस पर कलश स्थापित किया जाता है। कलश पर मूर्ति की स्थापना होती है। मूर्ति किसी भी धातु या मिट्टी की हो सकती है। कलश के पीछे स्वास्तिक और उसके युग्म पार्श्व में त्रिशूल बनायें। शैलपुत्री के पूजन करने से 'मूलाधार चक्र' जाग्रत होता है। जिससे अनेक प्रकार की उपलब्धियां प्राप्त होती हैं।

प्रथम दुर्गा त्वंहि भवसागर: तारणीम्।
धन ऐश्वर्य दायिनी शैलपुत्री प्रणमाभ्यम्॥
त्रिलोजननी त्वंहि परमानंद प्रदीयमान्।
सौभाग्यरोग्य दायनी शैलपुत्री प्रणमाभ्यहम्॥
चराचरेश्वरी त्वंहि महामोह: विनाशिन।
मुक्ति भुक्ति दायनीं शैलपुत्री प्रमनाम्यहम्॥

शैलपुत्री के पूजन से मूलाधार चक्र जाग्रत होता है। मार्कण्डेय पुराण के अनुसार यहीं नवदुर्गाओं में प्रथम दुर्गा हैं। अपने पूर्व जन्म में प्रजापति दक्ष की कन्या के रूप में उत्पन्न हुईं थी। तब इनका नाम 'सती' था। इनका विवाह भगवान शंकर से हुआ था। एक बार प्रजापति दक्ष ने एक बहुत बड़ा यज्ञ किया। इसमें उन्होंने सभी देवताओं को यज्ञ भाग प्राप्त करने के लिए निमन्त्रित किया लेकिन शंकर जी को उन्होंने इस यज्ञ में निमन्त्रित नहीं किया। सती ने जब सुना कि उनके पिता एक विशाल यज्ञ का अनुष्ठान कर रहे हैं, तब वहां जाने की लिए मन विकल हो उठा। अपनी यह इच्छा उन्होंने शंकर जी को बतायी।
उन्होंने कहा प्रजापति दक्ष किसी कारणवश हमसे रुष्ट हैं, अपने यज्ञ में उन्होंने सारे देवताओं को निमन्त्रित किया है उनके यज्ञ भाग भी उन्हें समर्पित किये हैं, किन्तु हमें नहीं बुलाया है। ऐसी परिस्थिति में तुम्हारा वहां जाना श्रेयस्कर नहीं होगा। शंकर जी के इस उपदेश से सती को बोध नहीं हुआ। पिता का यज्ञ देखने, माता और बहनों से मिलने की व्यग्रता और उनका प्रबल आग्रह देखकर भगवान शंकर ने उन्हें वहां जाने की आज्ञा दे दी। सती ने पिता के घर पहुंचकर देखा कि कोई भी उनसे आदर और प्रेम के साथ बात नहीं कर रहा है। केवल उनकी माता ने स्नेह से उन्हें गले लगाया। बहनों की बातों में व्यंग्य और उपहास का भाव था। परिजनों के इस व्यवहार से उनके मन को संताप हुआ। उन्होंने यह भी देखा कि वहां चतुर्दिक भगवान शंकर के प्रति तिरस्कार का भाव भरा था। दक्ष ने उनके पति शंकर जी के प्रति कुछ अपमानजनक वचन भी कहे।
यह सब देखकर सती का हृदय क्षोभ, ग्लानि और क्रोध से भर उठा। उन्हें लगा भगवान शंकर की बात न मान यहाँ आकर मैंने बहुत बड़ी ग़लती की है। वह अपने पति का अपमान सह न सकीं। उन्होंने अपने उस रूप को तत्क्षण वहीं योगाग्नि द्वारा जलाकर भस्म कर दिया। वज्रपात के समान उस दारुण दु:खद घटना को सुनकर शंकर जी ने क्रुद्ध होकर अपने गणों को भेजकर दक्ष के उस यज्ञ का पूर्णत: विध्वंस करा दिया। सती ने अगले जन्म में शैलराज हिमालय की पुत्री के रूप में जन्म लिया। इस बार वह शैलपुत्री के नाम से विख्यात हुईं। पार्वती, हेमवती भी उन्हीं के नाम हैं। उपनिषद की एक कथा के अनुसार इन्हीं ने हेमवती स्वरूप से देवताओं का गर्व भंजन किया था।

On this day, the worship of Maa Durga is started with the establishment of the Kalash(pitcher). On the first day, the worship of Shailputri is worshiped in the first form of Maa Durga. As she was born as a girl at the home of king of mountains Himalaya so the girl was named Shailputri. Vehicle of Maa Bhagwati Shailputri is Vrashabh(the ox), she holds Trishul (trident) in right hand, and Kamal(lotus) in the left hand looks so beautiful.
In her last Janma(birth), she was born as the daughter of Prajapati Daksh. Then their name was Sati. They was married to Lord Shiva. Once she went to the Yagya of her father, then she found there would be no place for his husband Lord Shankar(Shiva).She could not tolerate the insult of her husband Lord Shankar. She consumed her body in the fire of yogagni(fire). In the next life, She was born as the daughter of the Himalaya or Shailraj(King of Mountains) and known as the name Shailputri. In this life also, Shailputri Devi became wife of Shivji.
The importance and power of the first form of Navdurga Shailputri is infinite. In Navratri Pooja on the very first day her worship took place. On this day, the Yogis(the Monks) keep their mind in the Mooladar chakra. This is the time where they begin their Yogasadhana.This form of Maa Bhagwati is worshiped on this day. Devi Aavahan(Appeal), Sthapan(Placement) and Visarjana(Immersion) will all be done in the morning of the same day. The barley wheat are sown in a solitary place by making an altar with soil. The Kalash(urn) is established on it. The idol of Maa Durga is established on the Kalash. The idol can be of any metal or soil. Make a Swastika on the back of the Kalash(urn) and Trishul(trident) with the pair side of swastika. The 'Mooladhar Chakra' awakens by worshiping of the Shailputri. By this there are many spiritual achievements ofdevotee got fulfilled .
Story of Mata Sati
By the worship of Maa Shailputri Muladhadar Chakra is awakening. According to the Markandeya Purana, Maa Shailputri is the first Durga in the Navadurga. Shailputri was born in the form of the daughter of the Prajapati Dakshak in his former life. Then her name was 'Sati'. She got married with Lord Shankar(shiva). Once king Prajapati Daksh carried out a Yagya. In it, he invited all the Gods to take the part in Yagya(yagya) but he did not invite Shankar ji to this yagna. When Sati heard that her father is performing a huge Yagya(yagna).Then her mind went out to go there. She told about her wish to Shankar ji.
He said, Prajapati Daksha is rustic(angry) with us for some reason, and he has invited all the Gods to participate in the Yagya and offer their respective yagya parts to them, but Prajapati Daksha has not invited us. In such a situation, it will not be good to go there. Sati did not take Shankarji's advice serious. Lord Shankar permit maa sati to go their after seeing her excitement about her fathers Yagya and eagerness to meeting the mother and sisters.Maa Sati reached her father's house and noticed that no one was talking to him with respect and love. Only her mother hugged him with affection. There was a sense of satire and ridicule among the discussion of sisters. This behavior of the family make him sad and angry. She also saw that there was a sense of disdain for Lord Shankar also. Daksha also said some offensive words to her husband Shankar.
After seeing all this Maa Sati's heart was full of irritation, guilt and anger. She thought I did a big mistake by not follow the advice of Lord Shankar and coming here.She consume her body(form) by burning it immediately in yogagni. Upon hearing that drastic sad incident like the thunderbolt, Shankar ji got angry and sent his Ganas(pupil) to vandalization of Yagya(yajna) of Daksh. Maa Sati was born as Shailraj Himalaya's daughter in the next life. This time she was known as the Shailaputri. Maa Parvati, Hemavati mata are also her names. According to a legend of Upanishad, She had destroyed the pride of the gods in the form of Hemvati.
