Thai Pongal~

Pongal is celebrated to give thanks to Sun God and Lord Indra so that farmers can get better yields. On the day of Pongal, ranchers get ready-made items like pongal, sugar pongal, and sugarcane is advertised. An unusual worship is done to thank the Sun God. This gathering celebration is usually celebrated for four consecutive days. The main day of the festival falls on the fifteenth of January, which is called Bhogi. This is the day when people dismiss old property and welcome new goods. Ranchers consume their old family stuff in the flame while reciting "Pariya Kadivallum, Pudiyana, Pugudulam", which in fact indicates, "leave old things and let new things come". The exercise inside is that individuals should change over time with the development. New ideas should be understood and abandoned old.

The Thai Pongal festival is a gathering celebration celebrated throughout Tamil Nadu, where farmers express their thanks to the elements responsible for good harvest. Pongal is a multi-day festival. The first day of the festival is called Bhogi, where old and waste and unnecessary things have burnt. Pongal is celebrated on the first day of the Thai month (according to the Tamil calendar), hence it is also called Thai Pongal.

In Tamil Nadu, Pongal is significantly more remarkable than Deepawali. On the arrival of Pongal, rice and lentils are cooked in milk and as a sign of reverence, the god of sun deities and family is offered. On Mattoo Pongal, that day is the day of thanksgiving for the bull and the cow who is in charge of his work.

Legend behind Thai Pongal

There are extraordinary references to Pongal in our ancient sacred texts. Once Shiva told his bull Nandi that he would announce the daily bathing of people on the earth and feeding only once a month. Unknowingly, Nandy announced that everyone should eat daily and should have an oil bath once a month. After his incident, Nandi was punished by Siva for cultivating the field and helping the people.

Another episode is associated with Pongal. When Lord Krishna was a child, he wanted to teach Indra a lesson, because he became very arrogant after becoming the King of all the Gods. Then, Lord Krishna ordered all the people to stop worshiping Indra. Indra became furious and he made tremendous devastation on earth.

At that time Krishna Krishna placed the Govardhan Hill on his finger so that people could be saved from heavy rainfall. After this episode, Indra understood his wrong actions and told Lord Krishna that he forgave him. Beyond that point, the people started praising this day with extraordinary energy, and it is believed that Lord Krishna is constantly separated from them with a wide range of unrest in everyday life.

Customs and observations

Thai Pongal is celebrated in a period of three days. On primary day, the program of an extraordinary worship (honorable religious ceremony) is organized. Farmers also go to the fields to treat their diseases and to solve earth and sun, they solve the sandalwood paste. After that, they produce rice of the year. Many people boil rice in utensils to celebrate the harvest of Bonnie. The rest of the three days are marked by festivals within the festival.
