Raksha Bandhan Essay

Festivals are the celebration of togetherness in India. They play an important role to build a better society, where positive values flourish and the spirit of co-operation prevails. There are many auspicious days in India, which are celebrating by Indians with a lot of zest and spirit. Rakhi Purnima or Rakha Bandhan is one of them. It is known by various names; Vish Trak - the destroyer of venom, Punya Pradayak- the best ower of boons and the Pap nashak- the destroyer of sins.

A Rakhi is a thread made of silk that symbolizes affection, love, care and above all, protection. Rakhi can be easily referred as a symbol of protection. A sister ties the Rakhi thread on her brother's wrist on Rakshabandhan and expects the assurance of safety and protection from him.

In the Indian mythology, a full moon day is considered to be an auspicious day. Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi falls on a full moon day in the month of Shravana (August) according to the Hindu lunisolar calendrer. All Hindus do land up to celebrate Raksha Bandhan through-out the world, mainly in India, Nepal and some regions of Pakistan. Raksha Bandhan is known by the different names in different regions of India. The rituals may differ a little from region to region but generally carry the same aura. For the farmers, it is celebrated as "Kajri Purnima". On this day, they started sowing wheat and pray to god for good crops and in the costal-regions of India this day is celebrated as "Narayali Purnima". The day is devoted to the God Indra (God of rain), and the God Varuna (God of sea).

Raksha Bandhan has a deep rooted historical significance. There are many legends linked with the past of Hindu religion. According to the Hindu mythology, it is believed that on every Shravana Purnima day the deity Yamuna used to tie a sacred thread on Yama's (God of death) wrist. Yama was so impressed and touched by the serenity of this custom that he declared, who ever got a rakhi tied from his sister would become immortal. From that day the traditional has been performed by the people. Another legend is related to the Mahabharata. In Mahabharata, there is an incident where Lord Krishna was hurt during the war with king Shishupal, and left with bleeding finger. At that moment, Draupati had torn a piece of cloth and tied around his wrist to stop bleeding. Krishna was touched by her gesture and promised to reply her love and devotion in future, whenever she needs that. The legend of mighty king Bali and the deity Laxmi (Goddess of wealth) is also a popular one. But the story of Rani Karnavati and Emperor Humayun is the most significant evidence in history related with this festival. Rani Karnavati, a widow queen of the king Chittor sent a rakhi to Emperor Humayun with a request to save her dignity. The Emperor Humayun touched by the gesture and started with his troops without wasting any time to save her honour but before he reached there, rani performed Joher and sacrificed her life.

The above Mantra has a story behind it. It is the Katha that can be recited during the Puja. Let’s know it:

Once Yudhishthir asked Lord Krishna to tell him the story that can take away all the pains of human life. The story told by Krishna goes like this:

In ancient times, Devas (Gods) and Asuras (Demons) fought for 12 years continuously. The Asuras were winning the war. King of the Asuras brought all 3 Lokas (worlds) under his control and announced himself the Lord of the universe. Being tortured by the Asuras, Lord of the Gods, Indra consulted Guru Brihaspati (Mentor of the Devas) and requested him to do something for their protection. On Shravana Purnima, early in the morning, Raksha Vidhan (process to form protection) was accomplished.

Guru Brihaspati had chanted the above given Mantra for the Raksha Vidhan. Indra, along with his wife, recited the Mantra with Guru Brihaspati. Indrani, the consort of Indra, got Raksha Sutra validated by all the Brahmins and Purohits; and then tied it on the right hand of Indra. With the help of this Sutra, Lord Indra could win over the Asuras.

In India, the festival that reinforces the bond between a brother and sister is Raksha Bandhan. Every sister waits to tie the sacred thread, called ‘Rakhi ‘on her brothers’ wrist every year. This festival is celebrated on the Full moon day in the month of Shravan. It is one of the most popular festivals of India. There are many stories related to the origin of this festival.

If we go back to where this festival started from, it was not to mark the love between a brother and sister but for victory in a war.

Currently, this festival has become synonymous with the love and bond between brothers and sisters and it can be said that it’s a festival that reinforces and reaffirms the love between a sister and brother. While on one hand, the brother promises to look after his sister and protect her all his life, on the other hand, the sister prays for the long life of her brother.

Raksha Bandhan is the combination of two words, Raksha and Bandhan. Raksha means protection and Bandhan means bond. On the day of Raksha Bandhan, sisters tie silk thread known as Rakhi, on their brothers' wrists and the brothers assure them to protect from all kinds of trouble. The brother's oath of protection is acknowledged by the sisters, who pray for their well-being.

On this day, the silk thread that the sister ties on her brothers’ wrist is not just a thread, but a mark of pure, sacred and unceasing love between the two, coupled with the mantra for everlasting protection. When the sister gets married, the brother makes it a point to visit the sisters’ house and get the Rakhi tied by her.

Types Of Rakhis

Diamond Rakhi: These Rakhis give the look of a diamond bracelet that too at a very low cost.

Metal Rakhi: These Rakhis give the essence of metal artefacts.

Lachha Rakhi: These Rakhis are in approaching fashion that brings the feel of spirituality. Lachha Raakhi is embedded with Rudraksh and therefore, is the most demanded category.

Cartoon Shaped Rakhi: These Rakhis are widely popular among children. A cartoon shaped Rakhi is designed with different cartoon characters that appeals largely to the younger age groups.

As per the traditions, the sister on this day prepares the pooja thali with diya, roli, chawal and rakhis. She worships the deities, ties Rakhi to the brother(s) and wishes for their well-being. The brother in turn acknowledges the love with a promise to be by the sisters' side through thick and thin and gives her a token gift. Raksha Bandhan tightens the bond of love between the sister and brother.

There is another unique way of celebrating Raksha Bandhan. Women get ready in the morning for Puja and then put gold on the walls of their home. Further, they worship this gold with vermicelli dessert (Sevaiyan), sweet rice porridge (Kheer), and sweets. They stick the Rakhi threads on the gold with the help of those sweet dishes. Those women who sow wheat on Nag Panchami, keep these little plants in this worship, and after tying Rakhi on the wrists of their brothers, they put these plants on their ears.

Some people keep fast a day before this day. On the day of Rakshabandhan, they celebrate Rakhi following the Vedic rituals. Also, they perform Pitru Tarpan (homage to the departed souls of the family), and Rishi Pujan or Rishi Tarpan (homage to the saints).

Bengalis celebrate the festival of Rakhi as Jhulan Purnima. Whereas, in Kumaon region, Raksha Bandhan is termed as Hanyo Punyo. Even if we talk about places like Bihar or Nepal, the rituals tend to differ a bit. Be it any part of the country or even southeast nations, Raksha Bandhan carries the same essence. It symbolizes the pure bond between two people where one is the protector and the other seeks a refuge of console and confidence in him.

Rakshabandhan is the protection (Raksha) of a sister and this responsibility is efficiently carried out by the brother. And if we consider the whole world as a single paternal home, we all will start regarding every stranger as our own family member and protect them from an impending danger. The same kinds of relationships have been described in the legends of Raksha Bandhan.
