अमावस्या हिन्दू पंचांग के अनुसार, महीने की 30 वीं और कृष्ण पक्ष की अंतिम तिथि या कहे वह दिन है जिस दिन चंद्रमा आकाश में दिखाई नहीं देता है। इस दिन का भारतीय जीवन पद्धति में अत्यधिक महत्व है। हर महीने किसी न किसी नए त्यौहार से लोगो में खुशहाली व् उत्साह का माहौल बरकरार रहता है।


अमावस्या के नाम

जो सोमवार को अमावस्या पड़ती है। इसे सोमवती अमावस्या कहा जाता है। हर महीने एक अमावस्या होती है। इसी तरह, जब मंगलवार को अमावस्या आती है, तो इसे भौमवती अमावस्या के रूप में जाना जाता है। इसके अलावा शनिवार को पड़ने वाली अमावस्या को शनैश्वरी अमावस्या कहा जाता है। अन्य वारों (दिनों) में आने वाली अमावस्या की तुलना में, इन तीनों वारों में पड़ने वाली अमावस्या उपवास के लिए विशेष है।

अमावस्या शब्द कई भारतीय भाषाओं विशेष रूप से संस्कृत, हिंदी, मलयालम, असमिया, कन्नड़, बंगाली, कोंकणी, मराठी, उड़िया, तेलुगु और गुजराती के लिए आम है। तमिल में, हालांकि आमवस्या का उपयोग आमतौर पर धार्मिक क्षेत्रों में किया जाता है, शुद्ध तमिल विद्वान "पुथ्प्प्पराय" शब्द पसंद करते हैं

शास्त्रों के अनुसार, पितरों को देवताओं से पहले प्रसन्न होना चाहिए। जिन लोगों की कुंडली में पितृ दोष होता है, अथवा बच्चे हीन योग बन रहे होते हैं या नवम भाव में राहु नीच का होकर स्थित होता है, उन लोगों को यह व्रत अवश्य रखना चाहिए। इस व्रत के पालन से आप इच्छित उद्देश्य को प्राप्त करते हैं। विष्णु पुराण के अनुसार, श्रद्धा के साथ अमावस्या का व्रत रखने से केवल पितर ही संतुष्ट नहीं होते हैं, बल्कि ब्रह्मा, इंद्र, रुद्र, अश्विनी कुमार, सूर्य, अग्नि, अष्टसु, वायु, विश्वदेव, ऋषि, मनुष्य, पक्षी और सरीसृप जैसे सभी भूत आदि भी संतुष्ट और प्रसन्न रहते हैं।

आसुवुजा (सितंबर-अक्टूबर) के अंधेरे पखवाड़े को पितृ पक्ष (महालया) के रूप में जाना जाता है जो दिवंगत पूर्वजों के लिए श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करने के लिए विशेष दिन है। इस अवधि के अंतिम दिन, अमावस्या, जिसे महालया अमावस्या कहा जाता है, को वर्ष में सबसे महत्वपूर्ण दिन माना जाता है। यह माना गया है कि इस अवधि के दौरान किए गए क्रियाकलाप सभी दिवंगत आत्माओं को लाभान्वित करते हैं, चाहे वे आपसे जुड़े हों या नहीं।

The Amavasya ceremony is usually performed at home in the afternoon (so travel and daily work are postponed). Even the 18th century High Court judges in India used to celebrate Amavasya as a closed day. It was the British rule that closed the principle of Indian industry on Sunday.


Rituals

Shraddh on Amavasya is performed by Brahmins to ancestors whose father has died before. Nowadays a short 20-minute version of the ceremony is performed - black sesame and water are offered to departed souls as an obligation.
