The festival celebrates the victory of Lord Krishna over the defeat of a demon named 'Narakasura'. It is also celebrated as 'Hanuman Jayanti', which is the birthday of Lord Hanuman.

Story of Naraka Chaturdashi

According to mythological folklore, in ancient times there was a deity, Ranti Devta. He was exceptionally clever and fast-paced. He always involved himself in the religious functions and services of mankind. One day the God of death, Yama, came to him to get the king's soul. The king asked Yama that I never committed bad deeds and sins throughout my life. Why did you bring me to hell, Yama replied that a long time ago you returned a hungry priest from your door. That is why I am here to take you to hell.

The king expressed his desire to get one year of life from Yama. Yama commanded him for a year of life, and after that the king met with gentlemen and told him his story. He spoke of fasting him on Narak Chaturdashi and nurturing priests in the form of learning and apologizing for their past mistakes. You can get relief from all your past wrongs by doing these tasks.

On Naraka Chaturdashi, it is celebrated to be free from all sins as well as to keep oneself away from going to hell.

Alternatively, people provide Niveda (food) to the local goddess so that their family is always protected from black powers. This goddess is called her 'Kul Devi' because of the evil spirits to drive away and protect the evil spirits. Some families also provide food to their ancestors on this day. The second day of Diwali is known as Kali Chaudas in parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra.

The day commemorates Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura. On this day, the devotees get up early in the morning. Men rub their bodies with scented oils before bathing.
