=====================

Holika Dahan is a festival celebrated a day before the main festival of Holi, Holika Dahan has a very deep religious significance in Sanatan Dharma.

This holy day falls on the day before the full moon night of Phalgun month. It is an ancient Hindu practice that is celebrated in a small circular ceremony popularized as Holika Dahan with the protection of Holika Dahan (burning) and Prahlada. The date and auspicious time for Holika Dahan falls in the night or late evening, according to the Hindu calendar.

In the evening of Holi Dahan, people roast "barley" in the fire of Holika. Then they bring it to their house and spread it all over the house. According to Hindu mythology, this custom is considered very auspicious for every member of the family. It is believed that burning "Upali" in Holika Dahan will end all your problems in life. In this way Hindus have celebrated Holika Dahan with great reverence and the eagerness to celebrate this festival can be seen all over North India.

Holika Dahan Story :

Although Holi was originally a festival to celebrate the beginning of spring, today it is known as a mythological commemoration from Hindu mythology.

According to the legend, a long time ago there used to be a demon king named Hiranyakashyap who had been enthroned by his own son, Prince Prahlada while worshiping Lord Vishnu. The anger was so fierce that he tried to kill the prince many times but failed every time.

Finally, a plan is made in which Holika (Hiranyakashyap's sister) takes Prahlada in her lap and sits in the pyre. Holika had the boon that she would not burn in the fire. But contrary to this, when Prahlada sat on the pyre with Holika, Prahlada was saved by the grace of Lord Vishnu but Holika got burnt in the fire because she could use this boon while alone. Due to this he got the results of his karma. After some time, Lord Vishnu killed Hiranyakashipu and Prahlada became the new ruler of the kingdom.

The heart of the story is that good always conquers evil. Holi Dahan remembers this incident and as a symbol of Holika Dahan, there is a tradition of burning huge bonfire on Holi Dahan.

The festival is also associated with the eternal love of Krishna and Radha, and hence, the spread of Holi in the 16 days of Vrindavan and Mathura - two cities with which Lord Krishna shared a deep affiliation.

Historical Reference of Holika Dahan :

Holi is described from very ancient times. A 16th-century photograph in Hampi, the capital of the ancient Vijayanagara Empire, depicts the celebration of Holi. Similarly, at Ramgarh, close to the Vindhya Mountains, an old inscription dated to 300 BC has been found, which describes Holi. Some people believe that on this day, Lord Krishna killed a demon named Putana and, celebrating his victory, the Gopis played Holi with him.

Holika Dahan Festival :

Holika Dahan celebrations and preparations begin a few days before the main festival. People start collecting combustible materials, wood and other essential things to prepare the pyre for the bonfire.

In some places an effigy is placed on the pyre which is in some way a symbol of the devil Holika. Holika's symbol "Chita" symbolizes the destruction of evil on the evening of Holika Dahan. People set fire to the pyre, then people sing and dance around the bonfire and some people also go around.

Holika Dahan is the most important part of Holi celebrations followed by Dhulandi i.e. Holi the next day. This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and unites people from all cultures together.
