गोवर्धन पूजा का हिंदू धर्म में अत्यधिक महत्व है। यह पर्व सीधे तौर पर प्रकृति और मनुष्यों से जुड़ा है। गोवर्धन पूजा के शुभ दिन भगवान कृष्ण को अन्नकूट अर्पित किया जाता है। हिंदू पंचांग के अनुसार, गोवर्धन पूजा का त्यौहार दिवाली के अगले दिन मनाया जाता है। इस अवसर पर गोदान या गौ माता की पूजा करने का विधान है। गोवर्धन पूजा का त्यौहार पूरे भारतवर्ष में बहुत धूमधाम के साथ मनाया जाता है, विशेषकर श्री कृष्ण जन्म भूमि या भगवान श्री कृष्ण से जुड़े स्थानों पर तो इसका अपना विशेष महत्व है।
गोवर्धन पूजा का महत्व :
गोवर्धन पूजा का उत्तर भारत में विशेष महत्व है। इस दिन गाय माता की पूजा की जाती है। गोवर्धन पर्वत ब्रज में स्थित है। यह मुख्यतः एक छोटी पहाड़ी है। लेकिन इस पहाड़ी को पहाड़ों का राजा माना जाता है इसका कारण यह है कि वर्तमान समय में द्वापर युग का यह अवशेष आज भी मौजूद है। यमुना नदी ने समय-समय पर अपना मार्ग बदला, लेकिन गोवर्धन पर्वत आज भी अपने मूल स्थान पर टिका हुआ है। गोवर्धन पर्वत की भगवान श्री कृष्ण के रूप में पूजा की जाती है।
पौराणिक ग्रंथो के अनुसार, गोवर्धन पर्वत की महत्ता को दर्शाते हुए यह कहा गया है - गोवर्धन पहाड़ों के राजा और श्री हरि के प्रिय है। इस तरह पृथ्वी और स्वर्ग में कोई दूसरा तीर्थ नहीं है। पौराणिक लोककथाओं के अनुसार, भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने इंद्र का अहंकार तोड़ा था। जिसके पीछे एकमात्र उद्देश्य ब्रज के लोगों की रक्षा करना और गौ-धन की सुरक्षा करना था। गोवर्धन पूजा केवल गाय देवी के महत्व व् उनके सम्मान में की जाती है। क्योंकि गाय माता का हमारे मानव जीवन में अत्यधिक महत्व है। आज मनुष्य जो इतनी सारी वस्तुओ का उपभोग कर पा रहा है वह सिर्फ गौ माता की बदौलत प्राप्त कर पा रहा है।
गोवर्धन पूजा के पीछे की पौराणिक कथा :
धर्मग्रंथ 'विष्णु पुराण' के अनुसार, गोकुल के लोग देवों के राजा, इंद्र को प्रसन्न करने के लिए पूजा करते थे और एक यज्ञ किया करते थे। भगवान कृष्ण ने अपने परम ज्ञान से लोगों को सही मार्ग पर ले जाने के लिए इसे स्वयं लेने का फैसला किया और सभी को सलाह दी कि वे इस अनुष्ठान का पालन न करें।
भगवान कृष्ण ने गोकुल के लोगों से कहा कि वर्षा के लिए भगवान इंद्र का गुणगान करने वाला यह अनुष्ठान निराधार है। क्योंकि वर्षा करना उनका दायित्व है और इसके बजाय हमें गोवर्धन पर्वत की पूजा करनी चाहिए जो की हम सभी को इतनी सारी गौ वस्तुएँ प्रदान करते है। इस पर लोगों ने श्री कृष्ण की बात मानकर गोवर्धन पर्वत को पूजा आरम्भ कर दी। इससे भगवान इंद्र क्रोधित हो उठे और वृन्दावन के लोगों पर अपना क्रोध दिखाते हुए गाँव में एक भयंकर तूफान और मूसलाधार बारिश करने लगे।
भगवान कृष्ण ने लोगो को एकत्रित किया, और गोवर्धन पर्वत की पूजा करने के बाद, अपने दाहिने हाथ की छोटी उंगली पर पहाड़ को उठा लिया ताकि हर कोई पहाड़ी के नीचे शरण ले सके। उन्होंने सात दिनों और सात रातों तक गोवर्धन पर्वत(पहाड़ी) को उठायें रखा और इस घटना के पश्चात श्री कृष्ण गिरधारी के नाम से प्रख्यात हो गए। इंद्रदेव ने भगवान श्री कृष्ण की चमत्कारी शक्ति का साक्ष्य प्रमाण देखते हुए, उनकी श्रेष्ठता को नमन करते हुए हार मान ली।
गोवर्धन पूजा उत्सव :
गोवर्धन पूजा मथुरा और गोकुल में अत्यंत श्रद्धा के साथ मनाई जाती है। इस दिन 'गोवर्धन पर्वत', ब्रज तीर्थ स्थल पर हजारों भक्तों की भीड़ होती है जहां वे पहाड़ के चारों ओर एक ग्यारह मील के मार्ग की 'परिक्रमा' करने के बाद पहाड़ पर भोजन करते हैं और वहां स्थित कई मंदिरों में पुष्प अर्पित करते हैं।
अन्नकूट, जैसा कि इसके नाम से पता चलता है, का अर्थ है भोजन का पहाड़। इसकी तैयारी गोवर्धन समारोह का एक अभिन्न अंग है।
इस दिन देश भर में भगवान कृष्ण के मंदिरों को सजाया जाता है और यह पर्व भजन कीर्तन, नृत्य और मिठाई वितरण के साथ मनाया जाता है और गोवर्धन परिवार व् प्रियजनों को शुभकामनायेँ दी जाती है।
'थाल' या 'कीर्तन' गोवर्धन पूजा समारोह का एक और महत्वपूर्ण पहलू है। ये भजन कीर्तन भगवान कृष्ण के सभी मंदिरों में पुजारियों और भक्तों द्वारा सुनाए जाते हैं।

Importance of Govardhan Puja :

But this hill is considered to be the king of the mountains, the reason is that at present, this relic of the Dwapar era is still present today. The river Yamuna changed its route from time to time, but Govardhan Parvat still retains its original place. Govardhan Parvat is worshiped as Lord Shri Krishna.
According to mythological texts, depicting the importance of Mount Govardhan, it is said - Govardhan is the king of the mountains and dear to Shri Hari. In this way, there is no other shrine in the earth and heaven. According to mythological folklore, Lord Sri Krishna broke Indra's ego. The sole purpose behind this was to protect the people of Braj and to protect gau-dhan. Govardhan Puja is done only in the importance and honor of the cow goddess. Because the cow mother has immense importance in our human life. Today, a man who is able to consume so many things, he is only able to get it due to cow mother.
Legend behind Govardhan Puja :
According to the scripture 'Vishnu Purana', the people of Gokul worshiped and performed a yajna to please Indra, the king of the gods. Lord Krishna, with his supreme knowledge, decided to take it himself to lead people on the right path and advised everyone not to follow this ritual.
Lord Krishna told the people of Gokul that this ritual that praises Lord Indra for rain is unfounded because it is his responsibility to rain and instead we should worship Govardhan Parvat which we all have so many cow things. On this people accepted the obeisance of Shri Krishna and started worshiping Govardhan Parvat. Lord Indra became enraged by this and, expressing his anger on the people of Vrindavan, a fierce storm and torrential rain started in the village.
Lord Krishna gether the people, and after worshiping Mount Govardhan, lifted the mountain on the little finger of his right hand so that everyone could take refuge under the hill. He kept the Govardhan Parvat (hill) up for seven days and seven nights and after this incident, Shri Krishna became famous as Girdhari. Indra, witnessing the miraculous power of God, bowed to the superiority of Lord Krishna and gave up.
Govardhan Puja Festival :
Govardhan Puja is celebrated with great reverence in Mathura and Gokul. On this day thousands of devotees throng the 'Govardhan Parvat', the Braj pilgrimage site where they dine on the mountain after 'circumambulating' an eleven-mile path around the mountain and offer flowers to the many temples located there.
Annakoot, as its name suggests, means the mountain of food. Its preparation is an integral part of the government ceremony.
On this day temples of Lord Krishna are decorated all over the country and this festival is celebrated with bhajan kirtan, dance and sweets distribution, and best wishes to Govardhan family and loved ones.
‘Thal’ or ‘Kirtan’ is another important aspect of the Govardhan Puja ceremony. These hymns are recited by priests and devotees in all the temples of Kirtan Lord Krishna.
