कृष्णा जन्माष्टमी, जिसे कृष्णाष्टमी, सात्म-अष्टम, गोकुलष्टमी, अष्टमी रोहिणी, श्रीकृष्ण जयंती, श्री जयंती और अधिकांशतः केवल जन्माष्टमी के नाम से भी जाना जाता है, भगवान विष्णु के कृष्ण अवतार के जन्मोत्सव को मनाने वाला हिंदू त्यौहार है। कृष्ण जन्माष्टमी हिंदू विक्रमी सम्वत पंचांग के अनुसार श्रावण महीने कृष्ण पक्ष की अष्टमी तिथि को मनाया जाता है, जब रोहिणी नक्षत्र प्रबलतम भाव में होता है। त्यौहार ग्रेगोरियन कैलेंडर के अनुसार अगस्त से मध्य सितंबर के दिनों में पड़ता है।
कृष्ण जन्माष्टमी के उत्सव : श्री कृष्ण के जीवन की मनभावनी क्रियाओ जैसे बाल क्रीड़ाये और रास लीला मथुरा और वृंदावन क्षेत्रों में विशेष महत्व रखती है और मणिपुर में वैष्णवो के द्वारा भी विशेषता से अनुकरण की जाती है। जन्माष्टमी पर्व पर युवाओ द्वारा श्री कृष्ण के युवावस्था के दिनों की मौज मस्तियों को नाटकीय रूप में प्रस्तुत किया जाता है, दही हांड़ी प्रतियोगिता के माध्यम से भगवान श्री कृष्ण के चंचल और शरारती पक्ष को मनाते हैं, जिसमे युवाओ की टीम मानव पिरामिड बनाती है ताकि मक्खन के ऊंचे लटकी हांड़ी तक पहुंच जाए और इसे तोडा जा सके।
भारत में जन्माष्टमी पर उत्सव समारोह : यह परंपरा, जिसे उरीडी के नाम से भी जाना जाता है, तमिलनाडु में भी गोकुलाष्टमी पर एक प्रमुख कार्यक्रम का आयोजन किया जाता है। जन्माष्टमी, जिसे मुंबई और पुणे में लोकप्रिय रूप से जाना जाता है, दही हांड़ी उत्सव के रूप में, बहुत हर्ष और उत्साह के साथ मनाया जाता है। हांड़ी मक्खन से भरा मिट्टी का बर्तन होता है जो प्रतियोगिता से पहले सुविधाजनक ऊंचाई पर लटकाया जाता है। मानव पिरामिड पर सबसे ऊपर वाला व्यक्ति किसी वस्तु से मारकर हांड़ी तोड़ने की कोशिश करता है। हांड़ी तोड़ने के लिए अधिकांशतः नारियल का प्रयोग किया जाता है। जिसको हिंदू धर्म में शुद्धता, सत्य इत्यादि का संकेत माना जाता है।
जब ऐसा होता है तो पूरे समूह में मक्खन फैल जाता है, जो एकता के माध्यम से अपनी उपलब्धि का प्रदर्शित करता है। शहर में चारों ओर हाँडियाँ स्थापित की जाती हैं, और युवाओं के समूह, जिन्हें गोविंदा पाठक कहा जाता है, जन्माष्टमी के दिन जितना संभव हो उतनी अधिक हाँडियाँ तोड़ने की कोशिश करते हुए ट्रक में घूमते हैं। ऐसे कई गोविंदा पाठक एक दूसरे के साथ प्रतिस्पर्धा करते हैं, खासकर उन हांडियों के लिए जिनके ऊपर भारी पुरस्कार रखा जाता हैं।
जन्माष्टमी उत्सव पर पुरस्कार : आजकल इन हांड़ी प्रतियोगिताओ ने राजनीतिक आकर्षण प्राप्त किया है और राजनीतिक दलों और समृद्ध सामाजिक सामुदायिक समूहों के लिए लाखों रुपये के पुरस्कार देना आम बात है। पुणे में दादर, लोअर परेल, वरली, मज़गांव, लालबाग, ठाणे और बाबू जेनू, मंडी में सबसे प्रसिद्ध हांड़ी प्रतियोगिताएं आयोजित की जाती है। बहादुर गोविंदाओं के लिए प्रतियोगिता में भाग लेने के लिए नकद और उपहार की पेशकश की जाती है। मुंबई में 4,000 से अधिक हांडियों के लिए, 2,000 से अधिक गोविंदा पुरस्कार के लिए प्रतिस्पर्धा करते हैं।
Krishna Janmashtami, also known as Krishnashtami, Saatam Aatham, Gokulashtami, Ashtami Rohini, Srikrishna Jayanti, Sree Jayanthi or sometimes merely as Janmashtami, is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Krishna, an avatar of the Lord Vishnu. Krishna Janmashtami is observed on the Ashtami tithi, the eighth day of the dark half lunar or Krishna Paksha of the month of Shraavana in the Hindu calendar when the Rohini Nakshatra is ascendant. The festival always falls within mid-August to mid-September in the Gregorian calendar.
Celebrations of Krishna Janmashtami: Rasa Lila, dramatic enactments of the life of Krishna, are a special feature in regions of Mathura and Vrindavan, and regions following Vaishnavism in Manipur. While the Rasa Lila re-creates the flirtatious aspects of Krishna's youthful days, the Dahi Handi celebrate God's playful and mischievous side, where teams of young men form human pyramids to reach a high hanging pot of butter and break it.
Events on Janmashtami in India: This tradition, also known as Uriadi, is a major event in Tamil Nadu on Gokulashtami. Janmashtami, popularly known in Mumbai and Pune as Dahi Handi, is celebrated with enormous zeal and enthusiasm. The handi is a clay pot filled with buttermilk that is positioned at a convenient height prior to the event. The topmost person on the human pyramid tries to break the handi by hitting it with a blunt object. Mostly nariyal (coconut) is preferred being a sign of purity, truth etc. in Hinduism.
When that happens the buttermilk is spilled over the entire group, symbolizing their achievement through unity. Handis are set up around the city, and groups of youngsters, called Govinda Pathaks, travel around in trucks trying to break as many handis as possible during the day. Many such Govinda Pathaks compete with each other, especially for the handis that dole out hefty rewards.
Prizes on Janmashtami Celebration: The event, in recent times, has gathered a political flavor, and it is common for political parties and rich community groups to offer prizes amounting to lakhs of rupees. Some of the most famous handis are at Dadar, Lower Parel, Worli, Mazgaon, Lalbaug, Thane and Babu Genu, Mandai in Pune. Cash and Gifts are offered for Govinda troops to participate; for over 4,000 handis in Mumbai, 2,000 Govinda troops compete for the prizes.
