महाशिवरात्रि या महा शिवरात्रि (शिव की रात) एक हिंदू पर्व है, जिसे पूरे देश में बहुत धूमधाम के साथ मनाया जाता है। यह उत्सव आमतौर पर हिंदू कैलेंडर में माघ महीने के कृष्ण पक्ष (शालिवाहन के अनुसार) या फाल्गुन (विक्रम के अनुसार) में 13 वीं रात / 14 वें दिन पर होता है। 

यह पर्व विशेष रूप से भगवान शिव को समर्पित है जिन्हे कई नामों से जाना जाता है। महा शिवरात्रि आनन्द व् लुत्फ़ उठाने का दिन है व् इस दिन भगवान् शिव से जो भी माँगा जाता है उसे वह अवश्य प्राप्त होती है। दुनिया भर के सभी श्रद्धालु सुबह / शाम प्रार्थना करते हैं और इस दिन उपवास (व्रत) करते हैं। अधिकाँश लोग शिव के नजदीकी मंदिरों में जाते हैं और लोगो द्वारा समूहों में प्रार्थना की जाती हैं। 

भजन कीर्तन और पूजा रात भर जारी रहती है और भक्त भगवान् शिव और उनकी अर्धांगिनी माँ पार्वती को नारियल, बिल्व के पत्ते, फल और विशेष रूप से तैयार भोजन अर्पित करते हैं। महाशिवरात्रि की रात को शिव भक्त दीये जलायें रखते है ( मनोरम दृश्य:- मिट्टी से बने दीपक और घी में डूबी हुई रुई से बनी बाती) - यह आध्यात्मिक अभिव्यक्ति का सूचक है। 

महाशिवरात्रि की पौराणिक कथाएँ :

महाशिवरात्रि के त्यौहार को मनाने के पीछे कई कथाएँ प्रचलित हैं, लेकिन सबसे प्रचलित तब है जब भगवान शिव ने विष पीकर दुनिया को विनाश से बचाया। 

धार्मिक ग्रंथो के अनुसार, एक बार देवताओं और राक्षसों ने समुद्र मंथन करने और उसमें से निकलने वाली चीजों को आपस में बांटने का निर्णय लिया। जब समुद्र मंथन किया गया, तो विष से भरा एक बर्तन जो दुनिया का विनाश कर सकता था, वह निकला । देवताओं ने सभी से मदद मांगी लेकिन किसी ने भी उनकी सहायता नहीं की। अंत में उन्होंने भगवान शिव से दुनिया की रक्षा के लिए मदद मांगी। मानव जाति की रक्षा के लिए, भगवान शिव वह विष निगल गए। विष इतना घातक व् प्रभावी था कि भगवान् शिव  का गला नीला हो गया, और तब से उन्हें 'नीलकंठ' कहा जाने लगा।

एक और कथा महाशिवरात्रि को लेकर बहुत प्रचलित है जिसमे माँ पार्वती ने शिव को पति के रूप में पाने के लिए कठोर तपस्या की थी। पौराणिक लोक कथाओं के अनुसार, इस दिन ही भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती का विवाह हुआ था। यही कारण है कि महाशिवरात्रि को बहुत महत्वपूर्ण और पवित्र माना जाता है।

दूसरी ओर, गरुड़ पुराण इस दिन के महत्व के बारे में एक और कथा प्रस्तुत करता है, जिसके अनुसार इस दिन एक राजकुमार अपने कुत्ते के साथ शिकार करने गया था, लेकिन वहां उसे कोई शिकार नहीं मिला। भूख और प्यास से थक हारकर वह एक तालाब के किनारे गया, जहाँ बिल्व वृक्ष के नीचे शिवलिंग था। 

अपने शरीर को आराम देने के लिए राजकुमार ने कुछ बिल्व-पत्र तोड़ लिए, जो शिवलिंग पर भी गिरे। अपने पैरों को साफ करने के लिए, उन्होंने उन पर तालाब का पानी छिड़का, जिसमें से कुछ बूंदें शिवलिंग पर भी गिरीं। ऐसा करते समय उसका एक बाण नीचे गिर गया; इसे उठाने के लिए, वह शिव लिंग के सामने झुक गया। इस तरह, उन्होंने अनजाने में शिवरात्रि के दिन शिव-पूजा की पूरी प्रक्रिया को पूरा कर लिया। 

जब यमदूत ( मृत्यु के देवता ) उसके प्राण लेने आए, तो शिव के गणों ने उनकी रक्षा की व् यमराज को वापिस लौटना पड़ा। जब महाशिवरात्रि के दिन अनजाने में ही भगवान शंकर की पूजा करने का ऐसा दुर्लभ परिणाम है, तो महादेव की पूजा करना कितना फलदायी होगा। 

महाशिवरात्रि के रीति रिवाज और समारोह :

भगवान शिव के आदर सम्मान में, इस दिन कई श्रद्धालु व्रत रखते हैं। जबकि व्रत करने वालों में कुछ लोग दूध और फलाहार खाकर व्रत रखते हैं, वहीं कुछ ऐसे भी हैं जो इस दिन एक बूंद पानी तक नहीं पीते हैं। कई लोगो की ऐसी मान्यता ​​है कि महाशिवरात्रि के दिन भगवान शिव की आरधना सच्चे मन से करने से न केवल उन्हें अपने पापों से मुक्ति मिलेगी बल्कि यह व्रत उनके जीवन में सौभाग्य और खुशहाली लेकर आएगा।

कई भक्त इस दिन भोर में गंगा नदी में स्नान भी करते है फिर नए वस्त्र पहनते हैं और पानी, दूध या शहद से शवलिंग का अभिषेक करने के लिए शिव मंदिर जाते हैं।

As if there is a black fortnight that seems to glow in the night, devotees keep light candles and lamps lit throughout the night (panoramic views: - lamps made of clay, wick made of cotton and immersed in ghee) - this spiritual expression Is indicative.

Mythological Stories of Mahashivaratri :

There are many stories behind celebrating the festival of Mahashivaratri, but the most prevalent is when Lord Shiva saved the world from destruction by drinking poison. According to religious texts, once the gods and demons decided to churn the ocean and share the things that came out of it. When the sea was churned, a vessel full of poison that could destroy the world came out. 

The gods sought help from everyone but they found someone new. Finally, Lord Shiva asked for help to protect the world. To protect mankind, Lord Shiva swallowed that poison. The poison was so deadly and effective that Lord Shiva's throat became blue, and from then on he came to be called 'Neelkanth'.

Another legend is very popular about Mahashivratri, in which Maa Parvati had done austerities to get Shiva as her husband. According to mythological folklore, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati were married on this day. This is why Mahashivratri is considered very important and sacred.

On the other hand, the Garuda Purana presents another legend about the importance of this day, according to which a prince went hunting with his dog on this day, but there he did not find any prey. Tired of hunger and thirst, he went to the bank of a pond, where the Shivling was under the Bilva tree. 

To give rest to his body, he broke some bilva-patras, which also fell on the Shivling. To clean his feet, he sprinkled pond water on them, some of which fell on the Shivling as well. While doing so, one of his arrows fell down; To lift it, he bowed to Shiva Linga. In this way, he inadvertently completed the entire process of Shiva-worship on the day of Shivaratri. When the Yamdoot (god of death) came to take his life, Shiva's gurus protected him and Yama Raj had to return.

When such a rare result of worshiping Lord Shankar inadvertently on the day of Mahashivaratri, how beneficial it will be to worship Mahadev.

 

The Rituals and Ceremonies of Mahashivaratri :

In honor of Lord Shiva, many devotees observe this day. While some people keep fasting by consuming milk and fruit, among them, there are others who do not drink even a drop of water on this day. Many people believe that worshiping Shiva on this day with true mind will not only give them freedom from their sins and increase their chances of rebirth, and this fast brings good luck and happiness in their life.

Many devotees also bathe in the Ganges river at dawn on this day, then wear new clothes and visit the Shiva temple to anoint Shiva lingam with water, milk or honey.
