Story of Govardhan Puja: As per Vishnu Puran, the populace of Gokul used to love Lord Indra and commended a celebration in his honor as he was considered to be the supplier of downpours. When, Lord Krishna ceased them from offering supplications to God to Indra and love mountains and dairy cattle as they were the real wellspring of downpours and cultivators of field, separately. Master Indra, in anger, sent a storm to submerge Gokul!

It is then, that Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Parvat (mountain) on his little finger, to give haven to the populace of Gokul.
Govardhan Puja is known as Padva or Bali Pratipada in Maharashtra, as it recognizes King Bali who is accepted to leave Pataal Lok to manage over his kingdom in Bhu Lok consistently on this day.
